September 2024 news

The speaker at our next meeting on Monday 9th September will be Peter Hyde giving a talk on the work, and no doubt some of the more satisfying rescue achievements, of Oldham Mountain Rescue Team.

Oldham Mountain Rescue Team was formed in 1964 as a voluntary organisation to provide free assist and rescue services within the northern Peak District National Park, and parts of rural and urban areas of Greater Manchester.  Peter Hyde, formerly a BT Engineer, has been a member of the team since the beginning and has served at various times as Team Leader, Secretary, Treasurer and President.

Peter has participated in more rescues that he can remember but some stand out in his memory – secondment to Scotland in 1989 to help in the aftermath of the Pan Am plane brought down over Lockerbie, the harsh winter of 2009/10, and the moorland fires during the last decade.  His teams’ service has been recognised with a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service and him personally with a Greater Manchester Police Territorial Commander’s Commendation.

Anyone wishing to come along to the meeting as a guest can contact the club through the Contact Page of this web site, or if preferred they can ring 07717 375505 to speak to a current member.
