November 2024 news

The guest speaker at our next meeting on Monday, 11th November will be Tony Bostock giving a talk about Cheshire’s historic houses, their treasures and the families that occupied them.

Many of us delight in visiting historic houses when travelling around the country on our holidays, but we tend to forget what is on our own doorstep.  Cheshire, historically dubbed ‘the seed pot of gentility’, has many such ancient homes – Adlington and Little Moreton to mention just two.  Tony is a returning speaker, having a passionate interest since school age in the history of Cheshire and is now active in many groups and societies devoted to the subject.  He has written many articles and a number of books on different aspects of life in, and history of, Cheshire.  He previously served for 30 years in the Cheshire Constabulary.  On retiring from the police, he worked as the Community Safety Co-ordinator with Vale Royal Borough Council for 9 years until 2007.  He was appointed as a magistrate for Cheshire and sat in courts at Northwich, Crewe, Runcorn and Macclesfield, and now spends much of his time researching local and family history.

Congleton Dane Probus Club is a friendly group of retired professional and business people.  Monthly talks are invariably very well presented, sometimes humorous, sometimes informative, and always entertaining.  Anyone wishing to come along to the meeting as a guest can contact the club through the Contact Page of this web site, or if preferred they can ring 07717 375505 to speak to a current member.
