Congleton Probus Two Club held their monthly meeting at the Lion and Swan on Monday the 20th of May. The members enjoyed a lively and interesting meeting, followed by an excellent talk by Barbara Foster.

Vice Chairman David Dickinson opened the meeting by welcoming the two guests and also thanking Gordon Watkin for the excellent spring lunch, which had been held at Sheila’s Restaurant near to Rushton Spencer and had turned out to be an excellent event, well attended and much enjoyed by all those who were able to participate. The secretary read out a letter of thanks and appreciation from the guests for that day, Brian Noonan and his wife Lilian, Brian being the then Chairman of Congleton and District Probus Club.
The social diary continues to fill and the visit in June to the Denby Pottery Company is now well subscribed and will take place on Wednesday the 26th of June.
The dining group had enjoyed its first meeting and further meetings were planned for later in the year.
There was some discussion on the formation of a boules group plus ten-pin and crown green bowling groups and moves were being made to progress these particular interests. The snooker group continues to prosper, ably led by Don Newling and a lunchtime cruise on the canal boat the Judith Mary is being planned for either August or September.
The autumn lunch date was set for the 18th of October and will take place at the Manor House Hotel in Alsager. It will be a rather special event this year as it will be combined with the club’s 20th anniversary celebrations.
Barbara Foster gave a most interesting talk about the about history and current ‘life behind the scenes’ at Dunham Massey Hall. The members found it quite fascinating, many questions were asked and Arthur Tomlinson expressed thanks on behalf of the members present.
The meeting was followed by the usual member’s lunch, greatly enjoyed by all.
Probus clubs are local to towns and districts and are made up of retired business and professional people. They are non-denominational and the name itself derives from the first three letters from ‘PROfessional and BUSiness’. Our club was formed some 20 years ago at a time when the original Probus Club in Congleton had its full complement of members. At present our membership stands at just over 40 and we are seeking to attain our full membership again at around 50.
