Our speaker next week will be Mike Hewitt who was born in Holland and his family came back to England in 1940 due to the Second World War. He joined the Welsh Guards, attending Sandhurst for 18 months and then joined BP, following which he emigrated to Chicago and worked as a Christian minister, looking after alcoholics and the homeless.
Following that he returned to England, running two missions in Oldham and working with the disabled and the mentally impaired in Strangeways and Risley Remand Centre. He retired at 55 and organised a group of children who had been affected by the fall-out from the Chernobyl disaster.
His talk will be about the Chernobyl children. The disaster happened in 1986 in Belarus where a quarter of the land is still ruined. Mike has visited the area many times and will show and explain by film about the affects of this on children and adults.
Mike has met with government officials in Belarus and speaks with experience about a human disaster and its present effects after all these years. The talk and film will be very hard hitting about the dishonest handling of the affair by western governments and international bodies, including the WHO, who still claim that only a “handful” of people died because of the calamity.
The meeting will be held on Monday the 18th of June at 10.30 am at the Lion and Swan as usual. If you are a retired man from either a business or professional background and you would like to come along, listen to the talk and find out more about the Club then please contact us via this website and we shall be pleased to make you welcome as a guest of one of our members.
