Congleton Dane Probus Club held their monthly meeting at the Lion and Swan on Monday the 15th of June and Vice Chairman Don Cole opened the meeting by welcoming the members and the speaker John Doughty.
Don Cole thanked Mervin White for organising an excellent day out on the Manchester Ship Canal on the 3rd of June. Everything had gone according to plan and the trip had been very much enjoyed by all those who took part.
Vaidy Iyer told the members that he now had 22 members and their wives joining his day at the Anderton Boat Lift on the 6th of July and that space was still available if any more wished to join. The cost is very reasonable, includes a trip on the canal (including using the boat lift) and lunch.
David Dickinson gave an update on the possible trip to the Railway Museum in Crewe and David Heard said that his trip to JCB at Rocester was still a possibility but might well have to be put back to 2016.
A survey had been carried out amongst the members and a day at RAF Cosford was found to be the most popular suggestion, followed by a visit to the Space Centre in Leicester and also Bletchley Park.
Don Cole also informed the members of a trip to the Black Country Museum on the 15th of September being organised by Ladies Probus Two.
The autumn lunch received some discussion and Don Cole asked the members to let Doug MacKenzie have their menu requirements as soon as possible please.
Peter Jordan informed the members that both John White and Ian Fraser were not well. The members wished them a speedy recovery.
Peter Jordan then introduced the speaker John Doughty who gave a most interesting and entertaining talk on the subject of John Dalton, who was a Quaker from a humble background in Cumbria but eventually became famous scientist in Manchester and did, amongst many other achievements, discover the atom.
The Congleton Dane Probus Club meetings take place throughout the year. We meet in the morning of the third Monday of each month when a speaker has been arranged. These talks are usually serious, often amusing, but never dull. We meet at the Lion and Swan Hotel and many will stay on for lunch before dispersing.
