Congleton Dane Probus Club held their monthly meeting at the Lion and Swan on Monday the 16th of March and Chairman Don Newling opened the meeting by welcoming the members, new member John Whitehurst and the speaker for the day Karen Jones. The members stood in silence in memory of Geoff Parry who had recently passed away.
Don Newling presented John Whitehurst with his membership pack and lapel badge, John then giving the members a resume of his business background and experience, very interesting and well received by the members.
Don Newling then gave the members information regarding a potential new member Philip Roberts and proposed him for membership. The secretary seconded the proposal and Philip was elected unanimously.
Don Newling thanked Doug MacKenzie for organising a very successful spring lunch
at the Swettenham Arms and the members showed their appreciation of an excellent venue and entertainment.
Don Cole brought the members up to date with Mervin White’s trip on the Manchester Ship Canal. There were still a few places available but the outing was now confirmed and would take place on the 3rd of June.
David Heard informed the meeting of the situation regarding the proposed trip to the JCB at Rocester later in the year and Vaidy Iyer was able to give out more information about the possible day out at the Anderton Boat Lift near Northwich, possibly on the 6th of July.
David Dickinson had now been able to visit the Railway Museum in Crewe and gain more information. It looked as if a day out there was possible but it would have to be organised some time in either August or September and the cost appeared reasonable.
Don Cole introduced the idea of a new ‘Suggestions for outings’ list, the idea was well received and Don undertook to have the list available for the next meeting so that members could express their preference for any particular suggestion.
Paul Nadin thanked those who had attended the recent dining group lunch, a good time had been had by all and another lunch was being planned for later in May.
Chairman Don gave his usual interesting and enlightening report on the snooker group and Doug MacKenzie put a suggested date on the past chairman’s lunch and also the autumn lunch, the latter to take place after the AGM in October.
The speaker for the day Karen Jones gave a most interesting and enlightening talk about the Red Cross, where and how it operates and how it obtains funding. The talk was well received and Don Newling gave the member’s thanks.
The Congleton Dane Probus Club meetings take place throughout the year. We meet each month in the morning of the third Monday of the month when a speaker has been ‘arranged’. These talks are usually serious, often amusing, but never dull. We meet at the Lion and Swan Hotel and many will stay on for lunch before dispersing.
