Our speaker on Monday the 21st of May will be Mark Thomas who been involved in fund-raising for the RNLI for well over a decade and since leaving work four years ago he has joined the RNLI Youth Education Team and has seen over 10,000 young people across Cheshire, helping them understand how to stay safe near the water.
The RNLI is well known for its rescue and lifeguarding service, the recent series screened on BBC2 provided an hour of real rescue footage each week – sadly drowning claims a life somewhere in the world every 85 seconds. The object of the talk is to explain some of our less well know activities where we strive to achieve a reduction in incidents by education, such as school visits and awareness campaigns, using social media and a whole host of ‘prompts’ at the coast from beer glasses in pubs to reflective stickers on kayaks. He will look at the RNLI’s own ‘in house’ boat building facility, manufacturing up to 6 boats every year. These vessels take around 12 months to complete and cost approximately £2.5 million pounds per craft.
Our meeting will be at 10.30 as usual at the Lion and Swan. This should be a very interesting talk, so if you are a retired man from either a business or professional background and you would like to come along, listen to the talk and find out more about the Club, then please contact us via this website and we shall be pleased to make you welcome as a guest of one of our members.
