The speaker at our next meeting on Monday 12th December is Mike Tingle. Mike is author of three Congleton Town Trails available from the Tourist Information Centre. For our Charter Anniversary Year he added an illustrated Heritage & Heraldry Trail, explaining the significance of heraldic symbols displayed on the town centre flags and banners, about which most people would otherwise be unaware. Several of the 50+ flags, hand-painted by Congleton Community Projects volunteers, show various mythical heraldic beasts, such as the Griffin and Cockatrice, prompting Mike to write Congleton’s Mythical Menagerie, a trail for youngsters.
His talk, titled “Flagging up our 750th Anniversary” will be about these town centre flags and their heraldic significance. He initially gave this presentation at the Library and subsequently to Congleton History Society and several other local organisations.
Members’ wives are invited along to this meeting, which will be followed by a pre-booked Christmas lunch.
Congleton Dane Probus Club is a friendly group of retired businessmen and professionals. Anyone wishing to sample this meeting and talk can contact the club through the Contact Page of this web site, or if preferred they can ring 07717 375505 to speak to a current member.
